The town is the headquarters of a district in the Allahabad division of United Provinces. The name Banda may be derived from banda, meaning "boundary" or "border", as it was situated on an important frontier during ancient times.Banda has been mentioned in several Hindu texts such as Mahabharata and Ramayana. It was also known by different names at different periods: Bandarika, Bandarkot and Banapura are some examples.[citation needed]The city is located near river Ken (also called Kshipra), which flows through southern part of Uttar Pradesh state to join Yamuna River at Etawah District nearby Agra City . The river provides water for irrigation to farmlands around it; however, its flow becomes very low during dry season between October–November every year.Banda experiences extreme weather conditions with temperatures ranging from 0 °C (32 °F)to 48°C(118°F).
