The city is named after the Ballia district of which it was a part until 1991. It was founded by Raja Balwant Singh, who ruled from 1722 to 1744. The town became an important centre for trade and commerce due to its location on the banks of Ganges River and Ghaghra River (also known as Yamuna). Ballia has been selected in first phase out of 20 cities across India for Smart City project by Government Of India under AMRUT scheme.
