About Ayodhya

The city is believed to be the birthplace of Shri Rama, the 7th Avatar of Vishnu. It is also considered one of seven "Mokshapurush" (Sanskrit: मोक्षापुरुष) or cities that can help liberate a soul from cycle of rebirths. The other six are Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar (Uttarakhand), Kashi (Varanasi), Avantika and Dwarka(Gujarat). Ayodhya has been mentioned in various ancient texts like Mahabharata and Ramayana as Saketa. According to Ramayana it was built by Manu on the banks of river Saryu after he defeated king Visravas through Pushpak Vimanam given by Brahma deva for safe journey from flood waters caused due to heavy rains during his exile period .
