Warangal is the headquarters of the Warangal (Urban) district. It is located 530 km north of Hyderabad, and about 200 km from both Vijayawada and Nizamabad. The city lies on NH 163 in Telangana between Kazipet to its west and Hanmakonda to its east. Warangal has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.. The name "Warangal" was derived from two words: "Wara" meaning stone or rock, which also refers to mythological stories associated with Kakatiya dynasty; while "AngaL", means 'bamboo'. Thus it translates into bamboo stone i.e., a place surrounded by stones (bamboos).
