The town is home to a number of temples, churches and mosques. The Virudhunagar municipality maintains of roads. There are two major bus termini in the town; one run by state-run TNSTC and another by private operators. Virudhunagar comes under the Virudhupatti assembly constituency which elects a member to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly once every five years and it is a part of the Virudhuchalam (Lok Sabha constituency) which elects its Member of Parliament (MP) once in five years. The current MLA representing Virudhupatti Constituency is Rengasamy Raja from AIADMK party, while Kavitha Muralidharan represents Virdhachalam Lok Sabha Constituency.[2] From 1957, most MLAs have been elected from Dravida Munnetra Kazagham party including former Chief Minister MG Ramachandran who was also an actor.
