About Salem

Salem is located at 11.2°N 78.8°E / 11.2; 78.8 and lies on the banks of Thirumanimutharu River, a tributary of Kaveri river which flows through the city in a north-south direction along with its tributaries, namely Karapuzha (also called as Varaha), Bhavani and Noyyal rivers that flow from west to east forming valleys between them before joining Kaveri near Attur Taluk in Namakkal District after travelling for about 50 km towards south-east from Salem City . The city has an average elevation of 590 metres (1,940 ft). The climate is generally dry except during monsoon season when it receives rainfall from South West Monsoons winds blowing off Bay Of Bengal .
