Dindigul was a part of the erstwhile Chola Empire until 1004 when Rajendra Chola I captured it. In 1693, Dindigul fell into the hands of Maratha king Sambhaji and then to Mysore Wodeyars in 1736. It remained under their rule until 1780 when it became a princely state under British protectorate and merged with Tamil Nadu in 1949 after Indian independence. The town was constituted as a municipality in 1866 during British rule and attained municipal status again on 1 April 1979 after being amalgamated with Madurai district as per G.O Ms No 24 Municipal Administration/Town Panchayats (NCT) dated 10-04-1979 by merging 14 Town Panchayats viz., Athoor, Kodaikanal, Nilakottai, Palani & Vedasandur etc..
