The city is located at the foot of a hillock called "Dharmapuri Giri" and hence named after it. The town has an average elevation of 689 metres (2,260 ft). Dharmapuri is situated on the banks of River Pennaiyar which originates from Kalrayan Hills in neighbouring Tirupur district. History: Dharmapuri was once under the rule of Cholas and Pallavas who ruled this region with Kanchipuram as their capital around 1st century AD to 8th century AD respectively. Later, it came under the rule of Rashtrakutas till 11th Century A D . After that Vijayanagara empire took control over this region until 16th Century A D . In early 17 th Cen tury , Q ueen Elizabeth I sent Robert Clive to India for securing British interests against French & Dutch colonizers in South India during Anglo-French wars fought between 1689 -1763AD.
