Chennai has been selected as one of the first twenty Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.Chennai is classified as a "Beta-Global City" in the 2016 Globalization and World Cities Study Group (GaWC) report, ranked 29 among global cities. Chennai had an estimated population of 6 million in 2011, which grew to 7.6 million by 2017.. According to 2011 census data released by Govt .of India ,Chennai is world's most populous city after Delhi with population over 8 Million . The metropolitan area extends over an area of 1,289 km2 (496 sq mi).The urban agglomeration extends from Tiruvallur and north Paravur in the west along the coast up to Tambaram east towards Nandivaram-Guduvancheri in south covering a total distance of 25–30 kilometres (16–19 miles).
