It is also known as "The City of Lakes". It has a population of 1,47,844. Pali was founded in 1459 by Rao Deva (1433–1511), the younger brother of Rao Jodha, the founder of Jodhpur. The city was built on a site that had been previously established as an outpost for traders and pilgrims traveling to Hindu religious sites such as Mount Abu and Pushkar Lake. Pali's history is closely tied with that of Marwar; it remained under control from its founding until Indian Independence in 1947 when it became part one state within India rather than being ruled by independent rulers or colonial powers like most other princely states at the time.
