Jodhpur is a city in the Thar Desert, and is located at . It has an average elevation of . The city lies on the southern edge of the Thar Desert. Jodhpur's blue wall, which surrounds it as a fortification, was constructed by Mehrab Khan in 1734. The wall has five gates: Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower Gate) to the west; Suraj Pol (Sun Gate) to north; Chand Pol (Moon Gate) and Ganesh Pol to east are smaller entrances within close proximity near main gate called Sarv-Pol ("all gates"). There are several other small gates for people entering from different sides but these three mentioned above are more famous because they face major roads leading into Jodhpur while others do not have such significance.
