The city of Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Jai Singh II, the ruler of Amer. He planned to shift his capital from Amer,11 km (7 miles) from Jaipur to accommodate the growing population and increasing scarcity of water. Jai Singh consulted several books on architecture and architects while planning the layout of Jaipur. Under the architectural guidance of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, Jaipur was planned based on principles similar to those used in designing Hindu temples; grids were used to divide up space with major avenues generally oriented north-south or east-west following a grid pattern with streets either perpendicular or parallel providing an efficient drainage system without any place for water logging during rainy days as all drains flowed into a large storm drain at south end called "Gandhi nagar".
