Kapurthala is located at 30.4°N 75.7°E / 30.4; 75.7 and has an average elevation of 219 metres (718 feet). It lies on the Kapurthala-Bhatinda branch line and is well connected to other parts of India by road, rail as well as airways (via Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar). The city's name literally means "the Abode of God". The name derives from the words kapura ("God") and thal ("abode"). The city's original name was Kapti, which may have come from the word kapiṭaḥ meaning "cattle shed" or "cow pen", a possible reference to its location outside Delhi Gate where cattle were herded before entering Delhi through that gate during Mughal times.
