Jalandhar is the third largest city in Punjab, after Ludhiana and Amritsar. Jalandhar has a population of 708,000 (2001 census), with an area of approximately 3295 km2. The city lies on the Grand Trunk Road which connects it to other important cities in India such as New Delhi and Mumbai. The name "Jalandhar" comes from two words: jala meaning water; ndara meaning land or place; thus Jalad-Nadra means 'the end place' where water flows out into another body of water like a sea or ocean etc., but more often refers to rivers ending into another river etc.. It is said that when Rama was searching for his wife Sita he dug up the earth here at this spot near Tawi River looking for her whereabouts and hence named it Jallundher ("jala" + "nadara").
