About Faridkot

The city is named after Farīd Khān, the founder of the Faridkot State. The town was founded in 1763 by a Muslim Sufi saint Baba Sheikh Farid Shakarganj (1570-1661) who settled here with his followers. He died and was buried at this place which later became known as Kot Fatta or 'the village of the fortress'. Farīdkot District has an area of 4,739 km² and a population 1,065,929 (2001 census). It is bounded on north side by Bathinda district; on south side by Mansa district; on east side by Patiala district; and to west lies Ropar District.
