The city was founded in 1951 as a planned township. The town is divided into sectors, blocks and Mohali district has seven tehsils: Zirakpur, Ghagga, Panchkula (also known as Chandigarh), Mohali (the main city area), Ropar-West & Rupnagar-East. It also shares its borders with the cities of Patiala and Chandigarh. Mohali's infrastructure development plan included provisions for an IT park on 150 acres at Sector 71/72 which would be developed by the Punjab State Industrial Development Corporation Limited (PSIDC). In 2006 it was announced that Infosys had been selected to set up this facility in collaboration with PSIDC; however they pulled out of their agreement later citing lack of clarity over land ownership issues between the state government and local authorities. A new agreement was signed between Infosys Foundation India Private Ltd.
