Koraput is located at 20°40′N 84°50′E / 20.667°N 84.833°E / 20.667; 84.833 it has an average elevation of 616 metres (2045 feet). It is situated on the banks of river Nagavali, a tributary to Godavari River, and surrounded by hills and forests in all directions except north where there lies a vast plain area called "Gudari". The town was originally known as Kanchili or Kanakanagar which means the abode of goldsmiths because many goldsmiths lived here during ancient times when Odisha was famous for its rich mineral wealth.[1] Koraput district also includes some other towns like Jeypore, Parvathipuram etc.
