The town lies on the banks of river Mahanadi, which forms its northern boundary. The area around Jharsuguda consists mostly of flat land with low hills towards south-west corner and hilly terrain towards north-east corner. There are many small rivers flowing through this area like Baitarani, Suvarnarekha etc., which ultimately join Mahanadi River near Hirakud Dam (the second largest earthen dam in India).
