The city is divided into different regions like the old town, the new town and more recently developed areas. The old town which has a well-planned street grid of avenues and cross streets with wide roads in between is considered to be one of the best examples for urban planning in India. Cuttack was made capital of Odisha after it became a British colony, since 1803 till 1947 when Bhubaneswar replaced Cuttack as its capital due to political reasons. Cuttack continued as an important centre of business and trade throughout its existence until it became stagnant during late 20th century following establishment of newer cities like Bhubaneswar, Rourkela etc., though there have been efforts at reviving this once vibrant city through projects such as Smart City Mission by Government Of India & Make In Odisha by Government Of Odisha . The name "Cuttack" originated either from ""Katta"" (meaning Fort) or ""Kataka"" (a type pf tree).
