The district is located in the north-east of the state and shares its border with Andhra Pradesh. The district has an area of 4,743 km² and a population 1,868,946 (2011 census). The Boudh District was formed on 1 April 1992 by bifurcating Rayagada District. It is one among the 30 districts of Odisha currently. The name "Boudh" comes from Lord Buddha's visit to this place during his lifetime for preaching Buddhism in ancient India .It was also known as Vodhasthalipura or Vudhasthali during medieval period which later changed into Baudha or Bauddha after Muslim invasion . In modern times it came to be known as Budhh Nagar but still some people call it by other names like Kalinga Nagar ,Kalinganagar etc..
