Balasore or Baleswara (Odia: ବାଲେଶ୍ୱର) is a city in the state of Odisha, about 194 kilometres (121 mi) north of the state capital Bhubaneswar and 300 kilometres (186 mi) from Kolkata, in eastern India. It is the largest city of northern Odisha and the administrative headquarters of Balasore district. It is best known for Chandipur beach. The Indian Ballistic Missile Defense Program's Integrated Test Range is located 18 km south of Balasore.




Etymology
The name Balasore is derived from the local deity Baleshwar. The city was earlier known as Baleshwar Nagari (Baleshwar City). It was also called "Balabhadrapur" after its founder, King Balabhadra of Utkala Kingdom. In Oriya, it is still referred to as Puri-Bideswara or Puri-Konarka.
