The city is connected to the rest of India by National Highway No. 39 and National Highway No. 54, which connect it to Silchar in Assam and Guwahati in Assam respectively, via NH-37 (India) through Jiribam; Imphal is also connected with Kohima via NH-2 (India). The city has a domestic airport known as Imphal Airport located at Kangpokpi about from the main city where Air India Regional operates daily flights connecting Imphan with Kolkata & Guwahati . A new international airport named Lilabari Airport has been proposed near Sangshak village in Churachandpur district but there are no updates on this project since its announcement around 2008. Imphal was originally known as "Yengkhom", meaning "City of Gold".
