The city is situated on the banks of the Wardha River. The Yavatmal district has an area of 7,827 km² and a population 1,971,721 (2001 census). It is surrounded by Amravati District to the north-east and east; Chandrapur District to south-east; Gadchiroli District to south-west; Gondia district in Maharashtra state lies across river Wardha on west side. Yavatmal was founded by King Yashovarman from Rashtrakuta dynasty in 8th century AD as his capital under name "Yashodharapura". In 12th century it became part of Yadava dynasty who ruled over Deccan plateau for next two centuries. After fall of Yadava power it came under Nizamshahi sultans who were later defeated by Mughals during their conquest campaign into Deccan region.
