Udgir, officially known as, Udayagiri, is a second largest city and municipal council in Latur district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is located in the Marathwada division of the state (one of the divisions of Maharashtra based on geographical conditions). The city is located very close to the borders of Karnataka and Telangana states. Udgir is home to the historical Udgir Fort. The town and nearby villages rely mainly on agriculture, which serves as a major source of income for the population.




Udgir is located at 18.9°N 75.5°E﻿ / 18.9; 75.5 and has an average elevation of 539 metres (1,771 feet). The city lies in the western part of Latur district, on the border with Karnataka state and Telangana state, near to Nanded District in Maharashtra State . It is situated on a plateau surrounded by hills from all sides except one which leads to Solapur District .
The climate here is hot during summer and mild during winter season as it receives rainfall from both monsoon seasons i..e., south west monsoon (June–September) & north east monsoon (October–December).
