About Thane

Thane is the 8th most populous city in India and the 12th fastest growing urban agglomeration in Asia. Thane City also has a large number of real estate projects under construction, including some of Mumbai's tallest skyscrapers such as World One, Infinity Tower and The Residence. The city was founded by King Ashoka in the 3rd century BC during his southern expansion campaign against Kalinga (modern Odisha). It was located on an important junction along ancient trade routes linking north-western India to Gujarat via Saurashtra with eastern India passing through it via Nagpur or Surat. During Mughal rule, Thane was a centre for textile manufacturing; however its importance gradually declined after 1760 due to rise of Mumbai as well as rapid industrialisation across Britain leading to development there instead.[citation needed] After Indian independence from British colonial rule in 1947, Bombay state became Bombay province within newly created Union of States which later on became Maharashtra State when states were reorganised along linguistic lines.
