About Thāne

Thane is the birthplace of many notable personalities such as B. R. Ambedkar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Sachin Tendulkar The city is an important industrial hub in Maharashtra and houses various small-scale industries, including manufacturing units of automobile companies like Tata Motors (formerly TATA Engineering & Locomotive Co., Ltd.), Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T), Mahindra Aerospace,[1] Bharat Forge,[2] Force Motors[3], Ashok Leyland[4][5], Kirloskar Electric Company Limited [6]. Thane also has various large-scale manufacturing plants run by multinational corporations such as Colgate Palmolive India Private Limited.[7][8] The city also houses other major facilities for example: the Indian Oil Corporation's state oil refinery at Chembur; a thermal power station operated by Reliance Energy Ltd.
