Solapur was part of the Maurya Empire. The city is mentioned in the great Indian epic, "Mahabharata" as having been visited by Pandavas and their wife Draupadi during their exile. It is believed that a Pandava prince called Aravinda had established his residence here while going into exile. Solapur has played an important role at various stages of history: from being a major seat for Sanskrit learning to becoming one of India's first industrial cities, it has always attracted people from across religions and cultures who have left behind architectural monuments with unique styles that are still visible today . The earliest reference to this town occurs in Mahabharata where it finds mention along with two other places viz., Kuntala (present-day Kondhwa) on the banks of Mula river near Pune and Kusumadhvani or Nandigrāma situated on Chandrabhaga river bank (presently known as Krishna River).
