The city is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Serampore City was founded in 1755 by Danish merchants, It was named Frederiksnagor after King Frederick V who took possession on 21 December that year. The Danes were granted permission to settle down in Bengal as a trading community with certain privileges but not as an independent state or colony under the protection of Denmark–Norway's crown prince Christian VII.
