History The city was founded in the 16th century by the Gond Queen, Ahilyabai Holkar. The first fort of Satara was built on a hillock called "Nisarga-Bhau" (meaning "blessings of nature"), which is located around 5 km from the present day Satara. It later became known as Soneri Mahal ("Golden Palace") and served as capital for Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shahu I after his father's death, until 1708 when he moved to Raigad Fort. After this it remained one of several capitals controlled by different rulers over time before being occupied by British forces in 1818 during Third Anglo-Maratha War.
