Sangli is located at . It has an average elevation of 541 metres (1773 feet). The city Sangli and Miraj are twin cities. They have grown together into one large urban area, although they still retain their individual identities. The two cities are governed by the same Municipal Corporation, but Miraj lies in the larger district of Sangli rather than its smaller namesake district. India census, Sangli had a population of 488,921 with 252,827 males and 235,094 females —a sex ratio of 926 females per 1000 males—much above the national average for both sexes (933/1000). Children under six years constituted 14% percent while those between 6-12 were 7%. The literacy rate was 84%, higher than state's 75%.
