Osmanabad is located at . It has an average elevation of 523 metres (1,722 feet). Osmanabad was founded in the 16th century by Malik Ambar, a military commander in Nizamshahi dynasty. In 1853 it became the seat of a Residency and later capital city for Hyderabad State under British rule. The town remained so until 1956 when Andhra Pradesh state was formed and Osmanabad became part of Bombay Province as district headquarters. After formation of Maharashtra state on May 1, 1960 with Marathi speaking area separated from Gujarat and Karnataka respectively; Osmanabad District came into existence on June 19, 1962 comprising four talukas viz., Paranda (now known as Lohara), Purna , Kalamb and Tuljapur with Osmannagar town being its headquarter which was renamed to "Osmania" after Mirza Ismail who ruled this region during 1713-1714 A.D..
