The urban agglomeration includes the city and its adjoining areas, which form a part of the wider Nagpur metropolitan region. The city's original name was Nagar Keshavapuram (City of Keshavapura), named after an ancient temple town in present-day Ramtek tehsil, whose name is derived from "Kesava" (an incarnation of Vishnu) and "pura" meaning town or settlement in Sanskrit. It has been renamed several times: to Khadakwasla, again to Govindapur/Govandipur/Gopinathpuri before finally reverting to its current name. Nagpur district is one among 24 districts located in Maharashtra state of India .
