Mumbai is the most cosmopolitan city in India and has a multicultural history. The city was founded by the Bhandari community, which migrated from Rajasthan in North-Western India. Mumbai's culture is heavily influenced by its people of various ethnicities like Marathi, Gujarati, Kannadiga and Punjabis among others. The name "Bombay" derives from Bombay Castle (now called the "Black Rock"), an island located near one of seven islands that were originally inhabited by members of the Koli fishing community; over time they came to be known as Mumbaai or Mahim Bay Islanders ("Mahim" being another form for Bombay). In 1534 Portuguese explorer Duarte Barbosa became first European to reach these islands when he landed at Chaul harbour on May 26th . He named them Bom Bahia (or 'Good Bay').
