Mumbai is the most cosmopolitan city in India. The majority of Mumbai's residents are native Marathi speakers, and it is the largest city in Maharashtra. Other regional languages spoken by significant numbers of people include Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu; there are also different dialects within each language such as Konkani (Marathi-Konkani) which have developed among migrants from particular regions over time. The name "Bombay" was used for the first time a few years after its incorporation into British India on 18 April 1867 to refer to the local municipality established that year when Bombay Province was split from Gujarat province under terms of Act XXI of 1860 passed by British Parliament creating new municipalities including one named "Bombay". On 8 August 1995 its official name changed from Bombay to Mumbai after a long campaign led by Mumbaikars against potential confusion caused when writing addresses with postal code containing both 'Bombay' and 'Mumbai'.
