It is located on the banks of the Godavari River. Kopargaon is famous for its ancient temple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, known as "Kopar Ista". The town was once a part of Bhagur, which was ruled by Yadavas in ancient times. The name "Kopargaon" comes from two words: 'khop' meaning 'pot', and 'gaon' meaning village or settlement. Hence it means a pot-shaped village or settlement (of pots). It has been named so because there are several earthen pots found here during excavation work carried out in this area by Archaeological Survey Of India(ASI) team led by Dr B R Mani . In Marathi language khop means pot and gaon means place/village hence it refers to place where pots were made .
