The airport was established in 1930 and was then known as Bombay Flying Club. The airport used to have a grass strip, which acted as the only runway for many years. In the 1940s, a concrete runway was built by Mavji Jamshedji Modi (1887–1956), who owned Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., one of India's largest oil companies at that time. Juhu houses some of Bollywood's most expensive homes and is also home to other celebrities such as Anil Ambani, Suniel Shetty, Shahrukh Khan & Kajol among others . It has several upmarket restaurants and hotels including Leopold Cafe (formerly called "The Dome"), Priya Paul Restaurant & Bar etc.. Juhu Beach attracts tourists from all over Mumbai during weekends especially in evenings when there are fire shows along with live music performances by local artists like Sona Mohapatra or international acts like Sting or Bryan Adams etc..
