It is the administrative headquarters of Jalna district. Jalna was founded in 1724 by Malik Ambar, a military commander who served as Prime Minister to Murtaza Nizam Shah II, Asaf Jah I's son and successor. The city was named after his wife Jijabai (also known as "Jalno"). It became part of Hyderabad State after its annexation by the British East India Company in 1853 until 1956 when it became part of Bombay state and then Maharashtra state on 1 May 1960.
