It is located on the banks of Purna River. The city has a population of about 1,25,000. It was formerly known as Khirki or Khirkira (Marathi: खिर्की). Beed district is one among 24 districts in Maharashtra state in western India and Beed town is the administrative headquarters of this district. Geographically it lies between 18°26′ to 20°10′ north latitudes and 74°12′ to 75°37′ east longitudes.[1] Area-wise it occupies 4th place among 23 districts in Maharashtra State with an area of 5,903 km2.[2] In terms of Population density its stands at 2nd place with 633 persons per square kilometer[3]. As per 2011 census total population here are 1,842,731 living in 347 villages & towns.
