Baramati is located on the banks of Pavana river. The city has an average elevation of 538 meters (1765 feet). It lies in the Pune district, near to Maval region and is surrounded by hills from all sides. Baramati's climate is generally hot and dry with temperatures ranging between 20 °C to 40 °C during summer, while winter temperatures range between 10 °C to 25 °C. The rainfall in this area varies from 500mm-1000mm per year but mostly occurs during monsoon season which falls between June–September every year. The town was founded by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as a military outpost for Maratha Empire after he conquered Javli fort (now Jafarabad) in 1656 AD under leadership of Tanaji Malusare who later became his bodyguard ("Kunwar").
