Amravati is the administrative headquarters of Amravati district. It is also known as "Sone ki Chidiya" (golden bird in Marathi). The city was earlier part of the larger Gond kingdom, which ruled most parts of central India and some regions in present-day Madhya Pradesh. The region has been inhabited since prehistoric times, showing evidence of Megalithic culture around 2500 BC – 1000 BC; iron age around 1200–500 BC; and late medieval period from 500 AD onwards. In 1803 it came under British rule along with other parts of Maharashtra after the Battle Of Assaye.[1] After independence it became a part CIDCO's planned industrial township for Greater Mumbai but later declared a separate district on 1 May 1981.
