Alibaug, also known as Alibaug ([əlibaːɡ]) is a coastal town and a municipal council in Raigad District of Maharashtra, India. It is the headquarters of the Raigad district and is south of the city of Mumbai. Alibag is part of Mumbai Metropolitan Region and is situated at a distance of about 96 km from Mumbai and 143 km from Pune.




Alibaug is located at 18.8°N 73.9°E﻿ / 18.8; 73.9 and has an average elevation of 4 metres (13 ft). It lies on the coast of Arabian Sea, about south-west from Mumbai city and north-east from Pune city in Maharashtra state, India
The name Alibag comes from "Ali" + "Bag", meaning Ali's fort or Ali's town in Marathi language.[citation needed] The Portuguese called it 'Alega'.
