Ujjain is located on the southern slopes of the Vindhya Range. It is an ancient city established around 600 BCE. According to archaeological evidence, it was known as Avantika and later became one of the major centers of Buddhism with establishment of several monasteries in this region. In medieval period, Ujjain served as capital city for many kingdoms and dynasties namely Malwa sultans (14th century), Gujarat Sultanate (15th century) and Maratha Empire (18th century). The present-day city emerged from a village called "Ulaka" which was situated near river Shipra about 2 km south to Ujjain town proper during Vedic period; however, there are no records mentioning when it gained importance or how long this habitation existed at that place before emerging into prominence under its present name.
