Satna is an ancient city, which was known as "Shatavarika Kshetra" in the Mahabharata period. The present-day Satna was originally called 'Sattanapur'. It has been ruled by several major powers over the course of its history including Maurya Empire, Shunga dynasty and Gupta Empire. In medieval times it became a part of Central India under Rajput rule and later became a part of British India until India's independence in 1947. After Indian Independence from Britain, Satna district merged with Madhya Bharat state (which eventually became Madhya Pradesh) to form Vindhya Pradesh state on November 1, 1948; however this merger was dissolved on January 30th 1956 when Vindhya Pradesh State reorganized into Madhya Pradesh State along with certain other princely states such as Bhopal State etc..
