The city was founded in the 14th century by Ghiyas-ud-din Khilji, a Turkic ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. The fortress-city withstood repeated sieges before being captured by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1806. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Gwalior served as the capital of Jhansi Province; at that time it was an important centre for Hindu and Sikh communities within British India. From 1932 to 1947, Gwalior served as the capital of Madhya Bharat state (which later merged into Madhya Pradesh). It continued as a princely state until 1949 when it became part of independent India.
