It is the administrative headquarters of the eponymous district. Damoh was a part of Malwa region and became a separate district in 1818. It was named after its headquarters town, Damoh, which had been earlier known as "Dhamnod". The name Dhamnod is said to be derived from "Dharma Nagari" (city of Dharma). According to another legend it derives its name from Daman Singh Rathore who founded this city in 14th century AD. In ancient times it was also known as Dharmapuri or Dharmavati.[1] The area around present-day Jabalpur has been inhabited since prehistoric times and archaeological sites have yielded tools belonging to Stone Age culture.[2][3] The earliest reference made by Greek writer Herodotus regarding India mentions Gandhara (part of modern Afghanistan) along with two Indian tribes - one called Pactyans located north-west close to river Indus delta; other one being Gangaridae located south east near river Ganges delta[4].
