The founder of the dynasty, Yusuf Adil Shah (1490–1510), may have been a Georgian slave who was purchased by Mahmud Gawan from Iran. He had risen to become the vizier of the Bahmani sultanate. His son, Ismail Adil Shah (1526–1550), increased the strength and power of Bijapur through his martial abilities. He conquered Golconda in 1565; he also attacked Bidar and forced it to pay tribute to him directly, without being part of any alliance against Bijapur or other Sultanates in Deccan region at that time.
