Geography [ edit ] Betul is located at .[1] It has an average elevation of 437 metres (1432 feet). The district lies between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. Betul was once a part of the princely state of Dewas, which was founded in 1731 by Raja Jai Singh II. The town itself is believed to have been founded in 1818 by Rao Birendra Kishore Singh Deo, who became its first ruler under British rule.[2] He built a fort here which still stands today as one of the main landmarks. A statue commemorates his contribution to this city on top if it.[3][4][5] In 1857 he fought against Britishers with Tantia Tope during Indian Rebellion but later surrendered after few days when British army attacked his palace and killed him along with many people from royal family including women and children.[6][7].
