Tirur is located at 11.98°N 75.3°E / 11.98; 75.3 and has an average elevation of 2 metres (6 ft 7 in). It lies on the banks of Perumba River, which originates from the Western Ghats and flows through Tirur town before joining with Chaliyar river near Kottakkal village in Malappuram district . The area is surrounded by hills from all sides except north where it borders with Malappuram District .The climate here is tropical wet, moderated by northeast monsoon winds during June–September and South-west monsoon during October–November.[1] History [ edit ] According to legend, Tirunavaya was founded as a new capital city for Cheras after their old capital Mahodayapura was destroyed by floods.[2][3] The name "Tirunavaya" literally means "new city".
