The district is divided into three regions: Pathanamthitta, Adoor and Mallapally. The city of Pathanamthitta is the capital of the District. It lies between 77°15′E longitude and 8°50′N latitude, at an altitude of 518 m above sea level; as per provisional reports of Census India, population in 2011 was 37,538 with a sex-ratio of 1.01 males for every female. Literacy rate in 2011 was 97%. In 2001 census total population here were about 36 thousand; this has increased to 37 thousand by 2011 census due to inclusion if some parts which were included only in 1991 census data under Adoor taluk like Kallooppara etc., but now these are merged with main town area since 2001 Census Report published by Govt.. Hinduism is followed by majority including Hindus from neighboring states like Tamil Nadu & Karnataka etc.; Christians form around 20% while Muslims constitute 10% or more than that depending on various estimates available online ranging from 11%-20%.
