About Kanhangad

It is the largest town in Kasaragod district. It is also known as "Kanjangad" or "Canjangad". The name Kanhangad literally means 'land of jackals'. The story goes that a long time ago, there was a jackal called Kannan who lived near the present-day market area. He used to scare away all the people passing by during night times and hence he came to be known as Kannan Gadi (jackal leader). Later on, this place became famous for its markets and came to be known as Kanhangadu (the land of jackals). Another version says that once upon a time there were two brothers named Anchan Gada(Anchanna) & Chennayya living here with their families.
